What is the Laser Light Scattering

The laser light scattering can be divided into two groups, static light scattering(SLS) and dynamic light scattering(DLS).




When a monochromatic, correlated laser beam strikes a non-absorbing polymer dilute solution along the incident direction, the molecules in the beam radiate electron waves in all directions, and this electron wave becomes a secondary light wave source, that is, scattered light. If the molecule is stationary, the scattered light and incident light have the same frequency and are said to be SLS, which is also called elastic light scattering.


On the contrary, if the molecule is dynamic, due to the random Brownian motion of the particles, the frequency of the scattered light will increase or decrease slightly as the particle moves, making the spectrum of the scattered light wider. This technology is called DLS. Because of the very small relative movement of the scattered light, the dynamic light scattering is also called quasi-elastic light scattering.
